Dubbed “Beer City USA” for multiple years, including winning the coveted title once again this year (though it did tie with Grand Rapids), Asheville, NC is prepping to show just why it deserves such a title.

Starting May 24th and running through June 3rd, Asheville Beer Week will kick into full swing. To make the event even better, we’ve teamed up to create a new beer week badge for ABW 2012! American Craft Beer Week 2012

UPDATE: Many have been confused as to why they’re earning their ACBW badge with a non-US craft beer. The goal of this badge is for all in the craft beer community worldwide to come together and celebrate the growth of craft as a whole during American Craft Beer Week. Our apologies for not making this clear in the original post.

As we’re all very aware, the American craft brewery scene is exploding. With thousands of news breweries and brewpubs popping up across the country, there’s no doubt that the craft beer culture is deeply rooted and starting to take on the mainstream.

While we should be celebrating this continued achievement every day, the Brewer’s Association has put together one specific week for all to raise a toast to the American craft beer culture as a whole. Think of it as the ultimate beer week. From May 14th to the 20th, breweries and bars across the country will be holding special events all across the country.

To celebrate in the digital space, we’ve got a brand new edition of the American Craft Beer Week badge for you to unlock. This one’s an easy one… just check-in to any craft beer during ACBW (May 14th - 20th) and it’s yours!

Last time around you experienced a new level of hops, but now it’s time to unwind and enjoy the taste of summer. Our friends at Sixpoint in Brooklyn are releasing a brand new brew that is destined to be the drink of choice after a long day in the sun. The aptly named Apollo is making it’s way to store shelves now and to make sure you get a taste of it, we’re introducing two new badges.

With summer just ahead, this new badge is broken into two levels, giving you even more reason to make Apollo your beverage of choice this season. From May 1st through June 30th, Follow Sixpoint on Untappd, check-in to two (2) Apollos and you’ll unlock the Ray of Light badge. Continue up to five (5) check-ins and you’ll unlock the ultimate badge of the summer Sun God.

For a direct description, we asked Sixpoint Brewmaster Jan for a personal explanation, and here is what he told us: “Brewed with a 50/50 blend of wheat malt and barley malt in true weizen fashion and fermented with an authentic Bavarian yeast, Sixpoint Apollo could loosely be categorized as “Kristallweizen”, a rarer form of the traditional German wheat ale. It’s weighing in at a very sessionable 5.2% ABV, making it a refreshing choice for enjoying all throughout a hot summer day. The star element of this beer is the ancient Bavarian yeast strain, which produces unique and outstanding aromas and flavors of banana, clove, vanilla, and even bubblegum.”

Over the years, Foursquare Day has continued to grow with celebrations popping up all around the world. It’s hard to believe that one simple app has inspired such an amazing grass roots movement. This is our second year participating and we couldn’t be happier. As you can imagine, the Untappd team are big fans on Foursquare and believe in the power of social check-ins – can ya’ tell?

To celebrate this year’s festivities we have an updated 2012 edition of our Foursquare Day badge! In order grab this limited edition badge, Just check-in on 4/16/12 (get it… 4^2), add a location and push your check-in to Foursquare. You must add a location in order to qualify for this badge – it is all about checking in to locations you know. National Beer Day / Session Beer Day

Why not keep the week of badges going with two more epic badges for you to earn!

First up, we have Session Beer Day 2012, which takes place this Saturday, April 7th. This day is a chance for everyone to let go of their quest for the highest ABV and enjoy a flavorful beer that won’t knock them down. The goal is to make people aware that there are many excellent beers out there that are less than 4.5%, allowing you to enjoy many more without becoming belligerent. To unlock this back, check-in to a single beer that is above 0% AND under 4.5% ABV.

Next up, we have the return of our National Beer Day badge, which also happens to fall on this Saturday, the 7th. This day and badge are in celebration of the repeal of prohibition. This is a big turning point in the history of alcoholic beverages in the US and without this repeal, we wouldn’t be freely enjoying such a diverse range of amazing beers. Instead, we’d be drinking bathtub booze in someone’s basement. I think we can all assume which is preferred! This badge only requires a single check-in to any beer!

Remember, both of these badges will be available on Saturday, April 7th only, so be sure to check-in!

Stumptown Tart Release Badge

BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, is releasing its fifth generation Stumptown Tart this Thursday, April 5, in Portland. This saucy vixen is back and adding a new twist by combining three of Oregon’s favorite berries – Marionberries, Raspberries and Strawberries – in this year’s Belgian style ale.

With the release of this latest addition to the Strumptown tradition, we have a brand new badge for you! Available from April 5 through May 31, simply check-in to a Stumptown Tart (2012) from our friends a BridgePort and unlock this badge! While you’re at it, be sure to follow BridgePort on Untappd!

In an effort to increase awareness and show our support, we’ve launched a second level for our Organic Beer Month badge! If you unlocked it last year, you can work your way up to level 2, otherwise, if you haven’t you can get your very first! Where Nanokegs Dare to Roam!

Despite their limited distribution and availability, the Sixpoint nanokegs have an uncanny ability to traverse the most rugged and unlikely terrain on planet earth! Sixpoint has been chronicling these adventures through their #firstsixpoint blog on their website, the online gallery exhibiting where nanokegs dare to travel.

Now, Untappd and Sixpoint are teaming up to take #firstsixpoint to the next level. For the next two months, Untappd users may submit their own photos of Sixpoint cans to win a variety of prizes from the brewery. In keeping with the theme, “Where nanokegs dare to roam…” photos will be judged primarily on the uniqueness and creativity of the setting, but will be also be considered for the composition and style of the photo. You can view all the photos of the entries at http://untappd.com/firstsixpoint.

Here’s how it works:

Check-in to a Sixpoint beer, take an amazing photo that fits the theme above, and add the hash tag #firstsixpoint in the comment box
An internal panel of 5 judges (2 from Untappd, 3 from Sixpoint) will select the top six photos based upon the previously mentioned criteria
The top six finalists will then be identified on May 31st
A final round of judging will take place June 1st – June 7th

The winners will be announced June 8th

If you hadn’t heard, the year of 2012 is one day longer than usual thanks to the once every four year occurrence of a leap year. This magical day happens to fall in February. In fact, it happens to be tomorrow, February 29th! We thought it would be fun to celebrate with a badge that you’ll only be able to earn once every four years. Just check-in to any brew on February 29th to unlock the illustrious Leap Beer 2012 badge!

Epic Photo Contest

In March, we want to push your creative spirit and to do so we will be having another photo contest! However, this contest however will be much more epic.

Starting March 1st, we will be teaming up with our friends from New Zealand, Epic Brewing, to give away 5 Epic shirts a week for the entire month to the most creative photos uploaded to Untappd!

We chatted with the guys from New Brew Thursday about Epic’s latest creation, LARGER as well as the upcoming content! Head over and take a look!

To be entered, check-in to any Epic beer and attach a creative photo of you and your Epic. Be sure to be creative, though please keep it within the rules of our photo policy. Each week in March, Epic will pick their 5 favorite photos and we will announce those winners the following week. This contest is open to our entire community - wherever you can find Epic beer - as Epic has been kind enough to handle fulfillment. You can enter as many times as you want, but you can only win once.

Be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook as on March 1st, we will be launching a special page where you can view all of the photos being uploaded for the contest!
